Hi, I'm hoping someone can tell me what is slowly killing my acer palmatum. (It has 2 trunks) The stems started turning turn black near the top of the tree on one side only, and I have been cutting down the affected stems. I am now going at the trunk, hoping to 'get ahead' of this disease. The last cut was only about 2 feet from the ground and the inside of the trunk showed black areas. No doubt this is fatal and I will have to take out the entire tree as the affected trunk joins the other right above the ground. Is this Verticillium wilt?..nothing had actually 'wilted', just slowly died. IF it is, please tell me what I need to do before I plant anything else in that spot. Thanks, Jane
