hello all, I recently bought a stella cherry tree and planted it in my backyard in the corner. After some weeks i started noticing the yellow leaves and the the foliage just started fallling off.. well got to know that i was infact over watering the tree...so i dug up the soil around it and found the tree sitting in all that water. The soil around the roots was so dense that the water never seeped out. Now i am in a fix as to what to do . the tree is still alive coz when i scratched the bark its still green from the inside. Can anybody please advice me as to what i should do to keep my tree in a good state now. Thanks Saba Toronto, Canada
Wash the mud off the roots, re-plant in location that drains adequately, hope it is able to bounce back. Horticultural techniques for successful plant establishment can be seen at http://www.puyallup.wsu.edu/~linda chalker-scott/FactSheets/Planting fact sheet.pdf
Thanks Ron, But what about the roots that have rot... dont i need to do something about that. And what should i do to make the soil not hold all the water?
You should carefully trim off the rot and wash again if you did not wash after trimming. Hopefully you don't have a lot of root rot. Consider mixing in some coconut husk chips, perlite, or some sort of larger chink material with your dirt. Also if you build a mound and plant it in the mound the water will drain away from the roots better. Also read Ron's link! It has very good information for you about damaged or diseased roots!
