Does anyone know if you can start a pear tree from the seed of a fresh store bought fruit? And if you can what is the best way to do it?
This is possible but may require quite a bit of patience! There are various methods but the easiest would be: first, cut open the pear and remove the seeds. Pat dry and discard any damaged or shriveled seeds before storing. Store in the refridgerator in sealed plastic bag, until ready to sow the seeds. The easiest method is to sow the seeds in a container in a free draining soiless mix (3 parts peat, 1 part fine bark, 1 part perlite). Cover with fine grit to prevent a crust forming on the surface. Place the container in a sheltered frost proof place. Once germination occurs, transplant as soon as they are large enough to handle by the leaves. I hope this helps.
