Standardizing a Dogwood?

Discussion in 'Small Space Gardening' started by Unregistered, May 2, 2005.

  1. In a small south facing garden (with many trees, vines, small shrubs etc) I am about to plant a tree for privacy beside a well established Taxus hedge, approx. 8 ft high. I've found a lovely Cornus Kousa Satomi, 9 ft. above the rootball, with smaller branches starting about 6 ft up the trunk. I believe I could gradually standarize the Satomi as it matures, keeping it slightly espallied. The only other candidate I've found in the nurseries is a Cornus X Rutcan "Constellation" but I'm unfamiliar with it's growth habit. Research I've found says it reaches 25 ft. at maturity. Which of the two Dogwoods would be the best choice?

Thanks in advance for any guidance. As soon as I can figure out how to register I will.
