Spruce excessive needle loss

    'Picea abies' in a pot on a terrace facing south looses an excessive lot of needles this spring. The attached picture shows part of the damage. Can anyone advise what might be the cause and what I can do to save this lovely tree?

    Probably too hot in the pot. Spruces like a good root run in cool soil (look at where they grow wild!). To save it, plant in the ground, preferably on a north-facing slope rather than a south-facing one.
