Well, my 7 daycare kiddies and I just watched a huge pile of dirt get dumped in the driveway. I think I got a good deal... $100 for 5 yards? Just thought I'd stop in here while I enjoy my hot chocolate and the kiddies are having their free play time here...

Just wondering though, the first day of Spring is next week, and I'm feeling like we're done with the freezing. Is it safe to plant seeds outside this weekend already? I want to get an early start this year, last year I didn't get to it all till later, so some things didn't get to flower.

Well offically it's March 21, but clear nights could still produce frost for the next several weeks. Mind you, I've had a tub of pink geraniums out all winter and they look fine and are about to flower again.

I usually pay $15 a yard, not including transportation and can vary depending on the mix.

If you're seeding annuals, you should be fine.

You can definately plant peas and potatoes now, if you are growing those. Probably several other cool season crops like cabbage family, radish, chinese cabbage, parsley, dill. I don't know much about planting flowers from seed in cool weather, but I think poppies can be planted early. Too early to put out warm weather plants like tomato, beans, corn, etc.

So, it depends on what youare planting and how much you want to fuss with protecting things from the cold.

I use the soil products from fraser richmond bio cycle, their prices are about $24 a yard before delivery cost. I use their garden soil, lawn mix (high sand ratio) and compost bark mulch.

My wife planted seeds with grade ones for years. What the kids want is something to see, right now, and daily growth. Radishs will sprout in only a few days. Beans will show daily growth. In fact go dig up some Daffodils that are just above soil and pot them. They will grow about an inch a day, its actually forcing them.
Her big problem was that the kids liked to pull the plants out to see how the roots were doing. Re-plant from the nursery over the weekend.
