That's what I've always thought, as I do have Red Pygmy, but Keith's photos of the strap leaves seem so much longer than my RP. I will compare mine when I next see my friends tree again, which is hopefully soon. Agreed about the Pygmy name, it is a 'rapid' grower. Thanks for the tip R.
Are you noticing more flowers than previous years Keith? From what I'm seeing on the forum and on PM's it appears a good year.
D, These are the new trees that arrived this spring from Oregon. At least 3 of the 8 will have substantial flowering. My in situ maples are not far enough along to know about flowers yet Keith
No problem, Enkan is another lol not trying to put you off any particular one..I like the Linear leaves on them all..I’d say my Enkan, was more red/bronze than the deep solid Red Pygmy
Very much agree R, Enkan has that bronze hue about the leaves. The strap leaf maples are very moreish though, Lol.
Just thought I would post my Red Pygmy here for comparison with Pung kil. Not trying to say one is better than the other and they are at different stages, it's just to help me decide tbh.
I love Phoenix..it’s so intense in the spring..the close up looks photo shopped, but it isn’t. I wrapped that one last night the leaves are so delicate.
Spring thus far :) ..I think Tsuma Gaki will ultimately nail the position for me...but they are all incredibly interesting in so many different ways, brightly coloured, shape, flowers oh and hairy!
Yes I know what you mean, I'm often asked about a favourite and tbh it's different on a daily basis and sometimes hourly. Did you see that Tsuma gaki of P @Acirón on the Cheering ourselves up with maples thread? It certainly has the Wow factor.
Happy Spring from Idaho. We are still having some freezing temperatures overnight, but japanese maples and others are starting to leaf out. Hoping they don't get too frosted. Really liking the Japanese Princess I planted last fall. Transplanted a larger growing Autumn Moon to a bigger spot and hope that this is it for this spot!. Garnet is always a faithful friend and the trunk gets better each year. It is a high grafted tree if I am not mistaken. Our Joe Witt acer tegmentosum leaves out early each year and is getting larger as well. This year a large Norway Maple was removed so hoping the sun doesn't bother it too much.
I hadn’t but thanks D I have now.. very intense red..lovely. I’ll post a pic of mine when it comes out..it was a mature tree..2019 nursery rescue..it’s got 10 times more buds on it this year than last..after giving it some tlc
Happy Spring to you too C, from sunny but oh so cold England. I love your Japanese Princess, Sooo colourful. Your garden is also the perfect Spring picture.
@Acerholic D, you summon me. PD: When do you apply fertilizer? In spring? Where do you get those seeds of cool species?
Por lo general, aplico gránulos de liberación lenta a mediados de abril, pero como el clima aquí es frío, probablemente será a principios de mayo de este año.

Here are three from a few minutes ago that once again made it through a very very cold Spring night. I thought they looked pretty, but then I always do with maples, lol. They are, Goshiki Shidare, Beni tsukasa and Seiryu.
Been waiting patiently (2 years) for these japonicum seeds to sprout. The squirrels got hold to the seed tray on the right.
Dank U, ik doe mijn best om soms in de moedertaal van een lid te antwoorden. Is that right for you I ? But I know people of Belgium are multi lingual, so I expect any reply in several languages would do, lol.
