I would very much like to label this photo, which I took at the end of March. Can you tell me what we're seeing here?

    Thank you.

It's certainly Prunus. It could be Prunus cerasifera or Prunus sargentii or several others. Hard to know exactly without seeing the foliage, fruit or the tree as a whole.

Thank you! You are across the ocean from here, but now you've given me the plant's ID down to the genus. Excellent.

For people an ocean closer, the location was at the Stanley Park end of Nelson Street. Any best guesses on Prunus cerasifera or Prunus sargentii or P. —???— ?

(Otherwise, now I'm happy to call it just Prunus sp.)

    Thanks again.

This one is a plum, so Prunus cerasifera. The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival's blogger has written an article:
Cherry versus plum blossoms - what's the difference
You can see two of the plum characteristics she mentions in your photo: the single blossoms (and even easier to see with those buds that look like single lollipops, not the clusters from the same bud scales the way cherries grow), and the petals without notches. Have a look at the West End / Stanley Park Neighbourhood Blog thread for a lot of cherries in that same area.

My photos have been duly renamed: "Purple-leaved Plum (Prunus cerasifera) blossoms, near Stanley Park" and now those pictures are looking quite a bit more well-informed than during their previous "(Cherry?) Blossoms" status.

    Thanks to all.

Yes, I passed the plum-versus-cherry test at Wendy's URL. Life is swell.
