Been searching for this plant for several years. Finally found one too large to hang in my bedroom or even the dining room, but do not want to kill the plant by trying to split it in the wrong season or the wrong way. Can you help me?

You won't kill it unless you really work at it! Just de-pot it on a big sheet of plastic somewhere, tease off loose soil, untangle foliage if possible to some extent so you can spread out the 'vines' (be careful, they can be brittle) and pick a place where you'd like to separate it. Use a very sharp knife or scissors and cut straight through top to bottom and repot and water carefully. You will loose some rootage and foliage, but the majority of it on either piece should be ok (just get rid of whatever dies back once it does). OR, you can cut the whole thing back (foliage) to a shorter place, and see if it's still really too large (the pot itself) or not.
