I have a couple of October Glory trees that have been doing very well until spring 2011. That winter we had a lot of snow and cold weather that was unusual for coastal Virginia. In early spring I decided to prune the trees just before they came out of dormancy and I noticed the bark was splitting a little. The splits never seemed to change much but I believe they got darker over the summer. Summer and fall 2011 were very dry and the leaves yellowed and spotted, many fell off before they normally would have. Can I wrap, spray, or fertilize them to fix this problem? Should I prune again this spring or wait another year. I don't want to loose these trees they mean a lot to me.
