Sounds like you are talking about a lithops. They do look like split rocks and are sometimes called living rocks. They do require special care but should not be beyond the abilities of the average plant lover. I'll let you do a google for lithops cultivation or care of lithops etc. They can and do dry up, but this is usually just before another pair of "leaves" pushes up and through. Wazungy
