Identification: southeast Ohio, Fungus found on tree today: Identification help

    we found this fungus today in one of the trees by the barn. about the size of a coconut. As you can see, it almost looks animal like with the hair hanging down. Light brown to white colore. we have never seen anything like this before in our area

    Could this be Hericium erinaceus, Lion's Mane Mushroom?---or a relative thereof?

    It sure looks like it.. If it is, it is edible ad good for the brain :D

    In any case, it is most decorative and impressive!
    I am gratified to know that this specimen is a cohabitor of my home state.

    That fellow looks HUGE! What an awesome find. I'm sooo jealous. Keep an eye on this tree in the future as most of my 'hosts' will have these growing year after year.
    When these start to brown...the texture and taste isn't so good anymore...HOWEVER! If you're into drying and displaying mushrooms? This guy makes an interesting showpiece. :o)

    fungal fruiting bodies usually indicate decay within the host, what does the rest of the tree look like?
