Can anyone tell me what this fruit tree is? Local people, in southwest china, use the word for olive. It is very bitter, but then taste sweet after 10 or 15 seconds. It has a single pit inside. Thanks.

It should be the amalaki or the indian gooseberry. if not it still should be of the same genus (phyllanthus)

it also resembles a phyllanthus emblica

    Good Morning Chllipepper,
You are correct. If I'm not wrong the name has been changed to Emblica officinalis, a member of the Euphorbiaceae. I think in China they are known as "Yau Kum". In Malaysia we call it "Buah Melaka. The fruit is edible (high in ascorbic acid), hard and very sour and tart.
    Peace
