'Somei-yoshino' at Douglas Park (Willow & 20th), early stage of blossoming so still plenty of time to view them.

This is a pretty nifty neighbourhood, particularly the part from 37th to 41st, Willow to Ash. 'Shirofugen' on Willow, 'Ukon' on Baillie, 'Takasago' on Ash, and now tonight a friend and I discovered avium 'Plena' on Heather that no-one has reported. They're not big old trees, but nice large ones that are looking pretty good. To the left is looking north from 39th, next is looking south from there to 41st.
    20110509_39thHeather_AviumPlena_Culter_P1110592.jpg 20110509_39thHeather_AviumPlena_Culter_P1110591.jpg 20110509_39thHeather_AviumPlena_Culter_P1110596.jpg

There are two big old avium 'Plena' just north and south of 37th on Ash, the 'Takasago' street.

And back on Heather just south of 39th is one old 'Shirofugen'.

And of course there are 'Kanzan' in the area - these on 39th, looking west from Ash. [Edited 2011nov4 by wcutler]'Kanzan' run possibly all the way to Oak - I wasn't completely sure of the ID without the flowers.

Here's some autumn colour on the row of 'Ukon' on Baillie north of 39th. Does anyone know if the trees on both sides of the street are 'Ukon'? I'd have guessed 'Takasago' on the west side (the tree on the left in this photo), as all of those look considerably more weird than the trees across the street, but no-one has reported that.

I'm guessing these are 'Kanzan' looking both directions from Baillie on 39th.

On both side of Baillie Street are Ukon, and on West 39 Ave. are Kanzan.

I took a quick walk yesterday evening to check on the 'Somei-yoshino' at Douglas Park (20th & Willow). More buds than open blossoms but a very pretty sight on a grey evening.

The canopy of this lovely 'Beni-shidare' extends over half of the front yard of a home on the south side of West 16th, between Cambie & Ash:

'Somei-yoshino' at Douglas Park (West 20th & Ash) in full bloom -- in fact, beginning to wane as blossoms petals are falling. Photos taken yesterday evening during a walk through and then around the park.

Here are photos of some 'Takasago' trees in bloom on Saturday April 14th Ash St between 39th and 41st.

I have been meaning to get over to look at these since I bought the Ornamental Cherries book back in 2009! The trees themselves are not too pretty but the blossoms are a lovely two tone colour.

If you can go on Bill Stephen's walk at the Rose Garden on Saturday (2pm), he'll show you some 'Takasago' that are a little better looking.

'Ukon' have quite a few open flowers now too in this neighbourhood, on Baillie south from 37th. But I sent a friend to 7th and Trimble for photos of the big old ones there, and they're not open at all.

A short circle walk in South Cambie today. 39th west from Ash is a very nice 'Kanzan' street.
    20120503_39thAsh_Kanzan_Cutler_P1220921.jpg

The avium 'Plena' on Heather south from 37th are really past their prime but the trees still look excellent.
    20120503_Heather37th_AviumPlena_Cutler_P1220925.jpg 20120503_Heather37th_AviumPlena_Cutler_P1220946.jpg 20120503_Heather37th_AviumPlena_Cutler_P1220947.jpg

I was on my way to see Joseph Lin's two new discoveries beside the RCMP heritage house 'Fairmont Training Academy' at 4949 Heather Street at 33rd. There are photos in these two threads.
Unknown white semi-double cherry, late-blooming (going to be renamed 'Jo-nioi')
unknown pink semi-double cherry, late-blooming (still unknown)

Across 33rd, west from Heather, behind two fences, is a not-bad-looking 'Shirofugen'.
    20120503_33rdHeather_Shirofugen_Cutler_P1220986.jpg 20120503_33rdHeather_Shirofugen_Cutler_P1220988.jpg 20120503_33rdHeather_Shirofugen_Cutler_P1220990.jpg

West from there seems to be what was meant to be a long row of 'Kanzan'. Now it's some 'Kanzan'/avium, this 'Ukon' (do you think a mistake?), and a lot of avium trees.

Willow between 33rd and 37th has young Dawn Redwoods down the west side, and some great old 'Kanzan' trees on the east side.

Somei-yoshino - South Cambie, in Douglas Park

The blossoms are blooming in Douglas Park - this is from the Heather bike route on the south east corner of the park looking north.

This group looks like plums. I don't know if the 'Somei-yoshino' there are in bloom there yet or not. They are in bloom in Richmond and the warmer Vancouver neighbourhoods, maybe there too. I have them showing as in bloom on the festival map but am really not sure. Have a look at posting #6.

There is so little on our map in this neighbourhood, you'd think it had no cherries. But you'd be wrong. For one thing, there are 'Akebono' almost every block off Tupper Street, from 17th to 24th. I saw these from my car the other day and went back to have a look. From the north, you don't see these first ones, so I didn't get off the Cambie bus at 16th, and then there they were at the corner of 17th. The driver was impressed enough to let me off.
    20130402_17thCambie_Akebono_Cutler_DSC07167.jpg 20130402_17thCambie_Akebono_Cutler_DSC07170.jpg 20130402_17thCambie_Akebono_Cutler_DSC07175.jpg

But how about these on 19th west of Tupper? 'Akebono' alternating with pink plums, Kobus magnolias at the next block. This street is such a beauty.
    20130402_19thTupper_Akebono_Cutler_DSC07180.jpg 20130402_19thTupper_Akebono_Cutler_DSC07181.jpg 20130402_19thTupper_Akebono_Cutler_DSC07183.jpg 20130402_19thTupper_Akebono_Cutler_DSC07186.jpg

Between Tupper and Cambie on 19th are 'Kanzan' that will be quite showy.
    20130402_19thCambie_Kanzan_Cutler_DSC07189.jpg

On 20th west of Tupper are this nice couple of 'Akebono', also visible from across the school playing field.
    20130402_20thTupper_Akebono_Cutler_DSC07192.jpg 20130402_20thTupper_Akebono_Cutler_DSC07195.jpg

Then on 21st is the most beautiful single 'Akebono' tree ever. I don't know if it's not grafted, or if it's low grafted, but it has the elegance so lacking in the horribly grafted 'Akebono' we see around here. It just looks like a real tree. It's in a front yard.
    20130402_21stTupper_Akebono_Cutler_DSC07197.jpg 20130402_21stTupper_Akebono_Cutler_DSC07200.jpg 20130402_21stTupper_Akebono_Cutler_DSC07205.jpg

22nd has a couple of 'Akebono' and a double row of 'Kanzan'.
    20130402_22ndTupper_AkebonoAndKanzan_Cutler_DSC07208.jpg

And there's one 'Akebono' on 24th.

These are some of the Cambie boulevard trees from King Edward (25th) to 41st. The trees were all listed in 2010 in posting #23, but most have not been photographed.

These young 'Snow Goose' are at 26th.
    20130402_Cambie26th_SnowGoose_Cutler_DSC07239.jpg

The old 'Somei-yoshino' trees from 37th to 40th have been selected as Festival Favourites. I'm not sure why the Parks Board decided to fill in the block with new 'Akebono' - maybe for a comparison?

There are nine of these 'Snow Goose', two not yet in bloom and the others in full bloom, just before 41st.

Large, mature Yae-beni-shidare in yard at 844 W. 24 (south side), between Willow and Laurel in bloom April 4, 2013. Only YBS to match the big one on E. 35 and Knight in having a house in its yard.

Two Ranchos in bloom on April 4, 2013.

One (first two photos) is in front of 746 W.23rd and Heather.

The second (last three photos) is in the meridian of King Edward (400 block, just east of Cambie Street.

Here are some trees I saw on my walk between the Canada Line stop and the Sakura Days at VanDusen. Deborah posted these 'Takasago' blooming on April 14 last year. April 6 this year the flowers are looking perfect for photos, if you can manage to hide the trees. They're on Ash at 39th.
    20130406_Ash39th_Takasago_Cutler_P1410663.jpg 20130406_Ash39th_Takasago_Cutler_P1410665.jpg

The real star on the street is the single lovely 'Akebono', in the background in the first photo.
    20130406_Ash39th_Takasago-Akebono_Cutler_P1410668.jpg 20130406_Ash39th_Takasago-Akebono_Cutler_P1410669.jpg

On Willow from 37th, these 'Akebono' off in the distance at 39th stand out. There's another group at 36th and then some more at 35th, across from Eric Hamber High School.
    20130406_Willow37th_Akebono_Cutler_P1410670.jpg 20130406_Willow37th_Akebono_Cutler_P1410701.jpg 20130406_Willow37th_Akebono_Cutler_P1410702.jpg
    20130406_Willow35th_Akebono_Cutler_P1410707.jpg

The unknown tree mentioned previously at the RCMP Headquarters next to the 'Jo-nioi' is 'Takasago', blooming at the right time this year.

Here's a nice 'Beni-shidare' on Manson at 39th, and a nice 'Akebono' on the same block.
    20130406_Manson39th_Beni-shidare_Cutler_P1410746.jpg 20130406_Manson39th_Beni-shidare_Cutler_P1410750.jpg 20130406_Manson39th_Akebono_Cutler_P1410752.jpg

At 41st on Manson is a single 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' of no particular grace, but with lovely flowers.

The 'Jo-nioi' at the RCMP grounds on Heather at 33rd is starting to open. If you time it right, you could be able to see flowers on both the 'Takasago' and the 'Jo-nioi'. Even with so few flowers, there was some fragrance.

Another mystery cherry tree at 561 W, 27 (east of Ash), finishing its bloom on April 19, 2013. Old tree with interesting notching on edge of pink petals; petaloids present. Close-up of 4-flower corymb taken on top of dark green hedge leaves.
