I need the ID of a plant that grows well in sandveld in South Africa. I did research there and I'm pretty sure that the plant is part of a symbiotic relationship. I've checked a book I have and online and can't seem to find it, though with my inexperience that is not surprising. A poster and a paper is riding on an ID, so I would be so grateful if anyone could help! I believe that part of the reason why I may be having trouble identifying it is that the flowers, though distinctive, were probably not properly in bloom, which leads me astray. For the most part it is woody and spindly. The new growth sometimes look downy like lamb's ear plants. They usually didn't grow more than knee height, at least in the season we observed them, which was the South African spring (September). Please see the pictures attached.
No, this is evidently Asteraceae, with its head-like inflorescence (photo 2). The leaves have rounded dents at the end, which is typical for Tridentatae group of Artemisia.
