Here is an example from our yard. An eastern hemlock, Tsuga canadensis, growing on top of a rock in our stream. Very unusual shape for the species, probably shaped by white tail deer.
I don’t know how this little tree manages to survive. Nature finds a way...

You see this on bonsai when people try to recreate tree on rock, but when as you say N, "nature finds a way", it just cannot be matched. Great photos.

    Yes, quiet impressive and inspiring.
A good example of how nature manage to survive and adapt over the humans's non stop ending colonisation that destruct forests and landscapes all over the world each day.

I’m not convinced D. I’m sorry but I can’t imagine you not placing a single order, or picking something up on a spontaneous garden centre visit....

I know your not Bonsaiing them, but what a root structure for 'over rock'.

    I like that one!
I know they are palmatum rootstocks but every mikawa yatsubusa i have seen has always interesting roots...maybe the short internodes and the structure of the branches on that cultivar have something to do with that?
I like to believe that the top of a cultivar is interacting and sharing particularities over time with the rootstock more than basic purposes we know they do.
Just an observation and personal opinion though...

I don't know if you have seen the YouTube video from Maple grower on Mikawa Yatsabusa and the new varieties that have recently come from this cultivar, but if you get the chance 'do watch'. It gives a good idea of what not to have on your wish list. I still like Japanese princess followed by Mystic mikawa. The others are so very similar to each other and tbh perhaps the two I like are also similar to each other. So for me whichever becomes available first will be the one I will have and disregard the other. Hope that makes sense.
Bit off topic, so sorry for that....

Aka Shigitatsu Sawa is up there with my favourites also. Have you considered root over rock for that one as the nabari is so high?
