I am told this plant is solanum - the fruit which was green turned black . Is this a kind of pepper ? Edible? Where can I get more reference info ?

Thank you - I thought I wanted to thrash it this morning - well looks like it is safe to keep then. Will not venture into eating it !

I may ask around - live in the bay area too. I am confident that it originated from the compost pile which only contains refuse from the kitchen.
