I have a soft Maple tree which the bark is seperating from the trunk. It has split vertically 3 ft about 6 inches wide and from that the bark is separating from he trunk. The trunk is approx. 10 inches in diameter. I have used Morison Tree seal product to paint on this tree tar type product. After doing so the bark separates more. All trees locally has had this same problem. I have been told this is from winter moisture getting behind the bark causing this to happen. Now I have been told to cut the bark off back to where the bark is connected to the tree and the bark will grow back. The tree itself is growing health looking. What is the correct thing to do?
