I have just purchased some native to the area (Las Vegas) Snowtop Barrel cacti. They are large (the size of a man's head each) and joined together from the base of the crown upwards about 6 inches. They are healthy and I assume they are well rooted.
I wish to separate them into individual pots. Any advice as to the best/sefest way to accomplish this would be helpful. They will live outdoors.
    Thanks in advance!

Do you have a photo? If they are joined as you describe...as I understand it, I don't believe you can separate them...without ending up with large scars & ugly plants. If each barrel has just its roots tangled together, you could separate them...very carefully. ;) Since you say upward 6 inches, it doesn't seem the latter is the case.
