Has anyone tested out this product? It's not for smoking rather it's a type of container. I read someones comments about them in the maple section at gardenweb, the poster seemed knowledgeable (smart) so I read through the details on the website and ordered a 3 and 5 gal to test out.
Hmm, considering it's fabric, and is suppoesed to wick excess water away, it may keep it's fabric moist. Might this lead to a higher possibility of fungal disceases or such?
Poetry to Burn, I have been using this product for the last 4 years. All my maples are in these smart pots, they seem to work as I have never seen any circling roots when I repot the trees. I repotted a few 5 gallon trees that have been in these pots for the last 3 years, and again no circling roots and an extremely good root system. I also use a similar product sold by Texel that is sprayed on the inside with "Spinout" that is supposed to prevent root circling. http://texel.ca/html/en/agrotextiles/products/controle_racinaire/texr_agroliner.php Some of the advantages I have seen are, 1) No root circling 2) Good aeration. 3) I can repot once in 3 years 5) Drains on all sides Cons: Ugly, I usually place this inside a better looking container I did do a lot of research before getting this product. I read some of the materials from the study that was done to test this. I also personally contacted the Professor that did this study to make sure that all claims are legit. I will let other user chime in with their experiences. xman
X, I believe it was your posts that I read at Gardenweb. Very persuasive. Do you have any pics of plants in pots or root systems after potting up? Thanks for posting your experience. gil
Poetry to Burn, I had a feeling that you may have read my post on gardenweb. I do not have any picture of the root systems, however their website had many articles http://www.treebag.com/html/research.html I do not have any current pictures of my trees, but this link shows some of my trees in the Texel root bag. http://s52.photobucket.com/albums/g9/f6r22/?action=view¤t=IMG_0808.jpg Personally I find this a better option for me compared to the black plastic nursery containers that I usually get when I buy my trees. xman
X, Are they reusable? Seems like 3 yrs of soil and root contact would be a good amount of wear. Alex, do you use containers? Seems like Italy has a monopoly on the classic terracotta pots. They are plenty of em in this video of fara sabina. Have you bought any maples that were sold in the smart pot? Is that what it looks like where you live Alex? SPETTACOLARE! Gil
@ poetry ,yes i reusable this pot afer sterilize ,terracotta is very expansive ! one small pot 30€ = +-40 dollars, Fara Sabina is a beautiful country, near is Farfa, very beautiful ,this video is nice but not see Belvedere, one very beautiful, piece of Fara,my house is near, to 4Km=2,5 miles,my personal pics of Fara and Farfa, river Tevere @ ron "topary art" is one good nursery business ,;buxus, ligustrum, are easy to grow, and dry resistence....
Very beautiful Alex, I stayed at a villa near Lucca a few years ago, the landscape was magnificient. Here's what my street looks like. In Philadelphia outside the flower show yesterday.
I tested pots last year and found the ones used for hydroponics were superior. I tried to find some more open weave pots that were three gallons, but not in this town. However I did find about five 15 gallon pots called Accelerator, I didn't have to pay for them because they were promo pots. I wish my wholesaler would stock the Accelerator because I did see much better growth in this style of pot. However the more black you have the hotter the pot gets. I tested some pots last week the black pot was 3 degrees warmer then a white pot and the terracotta was 2.5 degrees cooler then the white pot. I am now toping off the white pot with white sand to check that solar gain. The ambient temperature that day was about 16 degrees, so the back pot was a bit warmer 2 C then ambient. I was a bit shocked to see the white pot so warm but then I saw that the potting mix was so dark I reckoned that was the reason. The Accelerator Advantage
The black fabric pots that I got from smart pots last longer than the ones from Texel. After 3 or 4 years the smart pots showed minimal wear, while the ones from Texel were wearing out. I do not reuse these as it is too much trouble for me to sterilze them, I only reuse them if I am putting the tree back into the same pot after root pruning. The Accelerator pots are nice, but I have never been able to get any. This year I have planted about 10, 1 and 2 gallon grafts in Pond pots since I did not have the smaller smart pots. I will see how these do. These are the plastic pots you see at the end of this article. I am not sure if these are the hydroponics pots that Richard is referring to. http://www.knowledgeofbonsai.org/pots/boxes.php The black pot will get hotter, but since they are fabric they will definitely be cooler than the usual plastic nursery pots ( I am guessing here). Sometime doing the pot-in-pot by placing the smart pot inside a larger ceramic pot and placing mulch between them may help reduce the temperature. xman
Well if they can make a fabric pot so can I. I should have some ready by next week and it will not cost 25 dollars a bag, more like a dollar. It will not be able to support itself but maybe I will have that figured out by then. So where is that hot glue gun? I hope momma still has her sewing machine, I am going to rich I tell ya, maybe a millionaire if y'all will pay that for a fabric pot. Y'all need to take your next vacation at a very poor farm to get the juices flowing again. Do y'all think I could get away with having Silky Chickens in the city. Alex y'all = ognuno and momma = madre A Silkie Chicks Link Oh I forgot I gots ta make pot for y'all eyes am gone calling momma
