does anyone know what kind of tree this is? it is growing under a dense canopy of post oaks and is the only one in this entire park. it is quite graceful looking. the bark almost resembles that of crape myrtle and the leaves remind me of chrysanthemums. they are maybe an inch long, alternate and whorled in formation. thank you.

I'd agree with Crataegus (hawthorn). There's about 200 species to choose from in N America.

Check local floras (treatments of native plants).
