I have a small garden, approx. 6ft wide x 4ft deep, in my backyard which gets the full afternoon sun from noon on (I am close to the Ontario/Buffalo border). It is under a large window that I don't want to 'densely' block and then there is a small basement window underneath that I would like to conceal.

I want to keep it clean, simple and maintenance free. I was thinking about two, low shrubs of the same type on either side (i.e. globe boxwood? will they get too big?) and something tall in the middle (growth right from the ground in a V spread upwards, that will only get about 3ft wide??).

If you have any ideas on what these shrubs, trees could be for this small space, I would appreciate your feedback. If I am going in the wrong direction, let me know that too. Thanks!

My wife and I have a small suburban lot. We love plants and wanted a big variety in a small space. We decided to go with all dwarf plants. Their slow growth rate not only allows for more diversity in the garden, but it also limits the amount of maintenance needed. Sometimes you have to pay a little more for a dwarf or super dwarf plant, because they are older and considered more valuable in the trade, but I think it's well worth the money spent. Here is a link to a photo tour of our garden. Maybe you will find some ideas for planting combinations that suit your taste.

Wow you guys have done a great job! I never knew there were so many different types of Japanese Maples! You have me thinking now. I guess I should just take my list of criteria to a nursery and see if they have anything that fits. I would hate to fall in love with something and then not be able to find it.
