The internet and I don't seem to be speaking the same language tonight. Surely these are poppies? What kind, please?
This is in condo building's garden, next to the sidewalk, in Vancouver's West End. There doesn't seem to be much more to the plant than what's shown. Here's another photo.
Looks like an Icelandic poppy, Papaver nudicaule to me, but I am no expert on poppies. There are also a lot of cultivated forms and hybrids.
I have never heard of Shirley poppies, and when I queried them, I saw a lot of double flowered ones. But the page at Papaver rhoeas, True Shirley Poppy Seeds £1.95 from Chiltern Seeds quotes the Reverend W. Wilks, who developed them from Papaver rhoeas in his garden in Shirley, UK: "Let it be noticed that true Shirley poppies (1) are single, (2) always have a white base with (3) yellow or white stamens, anthers and pollen, (4) never have the smallest particle of black about them. Double poppies and poppies with black centres may be greatly admired by some, but they are not Shirley poppies." The description fits. How is that written? Papaver rhoeas 'Shirley Poppy'?
Wendy, it seems you ID'd it in your first post, "Surely these are poppies?" I kind of thought that one too, but I am not so familiar with the other aspects of the plants, just a vague recognition of the flowers-- and the group is so diverse.
