I have just found an insect on a recently planted Smaragd hedge. I looked because the hedge looks in overall poor health. There are a large number of slimey sluggy looking things that on closer inspection have 6 little legs in the front. They are greyish white, a bit translucent and about 3-5mm long. I'm assuming that they are not uncommon, but I can't seem to find any reference to them in my books. Any ideas what they are? Any ideas for control? Much appreciated.
Could you be seeing some type of scale insect? http://www.mortonarb.org/plantinfo/plantclinic/pests_scaleinsects.pdf http://bugs.osu.edu/~bugdoc/Shetlar/factsheet/ornamental/FSscaleLecanium.htm You don't say if these are on the foilage or the trunks/branches. Newt
Thanks for answering. I doubt very much they are scale as they're quite mobile and I seem to recall that the crawler stage for scale is in the spring. They also seem on the large side. I did find them in the foliage though. M
Tree frog, maybe you mean bagworms? They would be active now. Is this what you see? http://entweb.clemson.edu/cuentres/cesheets/ornament/ce68.htm If not, can you post a picture? Newt
