    Hi there,
I need to put in some privacy screening and saw some trees at the Ocean Park Pub in South Surrey that looked perfect. They look like a birch but appear to be very very skinny and I'd love to know what they are. I don't have a lot of width in my backyard for wide trees, so these seem great. If anyone lives in the White Rock area & has seen these & knows what they are, please let me know! Appreciated,
    Gillian :)

    Quite the question.

Hornbeam are skinny. But I'd consider the leaf of a Lombardy poplar to look more like a birch shaped leaf at a distance. But poplar leaves are bigger when you get close and see them.

What looked like a birch, or birch-like? The leaf? Bark? Form?

Thanks for the Hornbeam tip, I'll check those out. The leaves looked like birch but now need to go back & look at the bark, but don't think it was that white. I did a little digging on the internet yesterday & am wondering if they might be upright/columnar European Aspens.

These are pretty common in the local trade.

Hi Ron - thanks for your reply. Were you meaning European Columnar Aspens or the Hornbeams?

Both are common, but point was the aspen is likely to be what you saw.
