Hi, I have Red Pontiac's and Yukon Golds in my garden since 1 week before may long holiday. I'm wondering if I would get anything for dinner tonite if I was to dig one of them up. The Pontiac's are flowering, but the Golds ( not flowering yet) are actually taller. Can anyone tell me what I may expect if I was to dig one of either of them up? Zone 3
I dig some of mine for small potatoes just after the blossoms have finished. In full blossom the yield will be very small. http://www.durgan.org/Blog/Durgan.html
i often will dig around in my taters when I need some for cooking. Just be aware you might get some that are under-ripe, and these can look kinda golden or very green. These are no good for cooking, but with pontiacs, just look for the bright red and waxy looking ones. You really should wait til the plants die back, or until a couple of weeks after they flower, but as long as you don't eat the really green ones or the golden glassy ones you should be alright. Home grown potatoes are the best thing...
From what I have read concerning potatoes and their flowering, once the potato flowers appear, there are small potatoes available for harvesting under the plants. It's how I know when to start looking for the first little nugget potatoes each season! Anne
