I am having a hard time finding sitka spruce cultivars and people who have grown them. Any one have any experience?
'Tenas' and 'Papoose' have been seen at local garden centers in the past. Check The Plant Locator - Western Region (2004, Black-Eyed Susans/Timber, Portland) for other sources of Sitka spruce variants. If you are interested in 'Bentham's Sunlight' (the spontaneous yellow form valued by the Haida) a mail-order nursery in Eatonville is listing it. http://www.cnos.biz/Catalog/2009/picea.htm
Iseli, a wholesale grower selling to the trade, grows at least 3: Picea stichensis Aurea, and P. stichensis Papoose and P. stichensis Tannhoft - all three listed as "upright, broad". A very fine grower. Tidbit: The USDA considers this species a "Culturally Significant Plant". Found some more growers with P. stichensis on their plant list - all of them sell to the trade. Should be possible to find a retailer that buys from one of these growers. Good Luck!
