I have what I believe is a mature Crimson Queen that I have potted in a whiskey barrel. It has one single unique leaf that has portions of very bright red. Is this a common ocurrence?
That does look like a variegated leaf portion to me. I have seen this on occasion with palmate types but have yet to get them to stabilize. The variegation can sometimes be seen as a small streak on the stem leading up to that leaf. There is a possibility that the bud underneath the petiole for that leaf could become a variegated shoot, but I have yet to have that happen for me on a maple. They have always returned to normal the following year.
Thanks Matt! I would like to also say hello to everyone here, I have been following this forum for sometime and am glad I now joined. It really is an incredible resource and I hope to be able to make some worth while contributions in the future. Thank you to eveyone else here that is active as I have been learning so much from you. I decided to try to airlayer this whole branch a couple weeks ago as it needs to be pruned anyway. I will make sure to update the action as it happens. It is fascinating to see such a distinct leaf from so many thousands of leaves the tree has. It is the first one I go to when I check on the tree.
