We have two silver maples planted at the end or our cottage. They are also drooping almost to the ground. We'd like to prune them but are not sure if it is safe in the fall. Or shoud we wait until Spring? They need a lot of pruning. thanx

careful not to prune them too late in winter, if the sap is rising they will bleed terribly. If you want them to not weep too much, you'll need to do "crown raising," and might want to talk to an arborist.

Mature trees and "a lot of pruning" tend to not be a successful combination. Seek professional guidance. Look for certification and other indications of competence and conscience.
