I found a maple at a nursery, I liked it so I bought it. My nephew said it is a Silver Maple because under the leaf is silver. I live in Louisiana and found out that the tree was not usually grown here. Is there anything I can do to help it survive here?

If it is a silver maple it will want to make a quite large tree that can break badly in strong winds, especially when becoming older. Other climate (and soil) considerations aside if high winds reach where you are maybe that is why you don't see any around.

Yes we have hurricanes here almost for the last 10 years or so. It is far far away from any structures that might get hit by it. What about heat and soil? It came in a bucket, sowhen the roots grow out of the soil it came with will it be harmed?

Just my two cents. I planted many of them because they sprout and grow like weeds here " Chicagoland ". I regret everyone that i planted. They grow quick and are weak. I am amazed they would be sold at a nursery. They grow very jangley. They are a weed and a problem in my city.

    oops

I guess I should have asked about it before I planted it. Now that I have a place to help and guide me I'll get it right from now on. Thanks. :)

Silver maple forms a beautiful stately tree that is much prized in Europe. Of course we like tripe here in France, too! :)

    YMMV,

Some also call Populus alba "silver maple". I'd think a maple with some noticeable silver or whitish coloring to the leaf underside could also be a Freeman maple, the hybrid between silver and red maples. Many forms of this have been named and put on the market, sometimes marketed mistakenly as pure red maple cultivars. Being half red maple and usually selected for superior characteristics if you came home with one of these it may make a more sturdy specimen than a pure silver maple.

Has any attempt been made to get a specific name from the retailer?

It wasn't a plant reference, mhib. Tripe is a type of edible offal from the stomachs of various farm animals (from Wikipedia - you can look it up). Emery was just saying that the French are known for valuing things that others might find undesirable.

I have bought a plant pink tamerisk . which is considered a nuisance weed in areas . I have a good space for it ,and think its great. I refer to it as the weed. Have you a picture of your tree for a good id? So good luck in your planting.

I have cut down two silver maples in my yard over the last five years. Both were mature trees planted by the previous owners.

Planted where they can't fall on anything silver maple is a fine tree. Unique bark. Good fall color. Fast growth. Under-rated spring flower display.

They're weedy but not like the mower doesn't kill them. Just don't plant the tree where it will grow over your house or where you park any cars you like and you'll be fine.

I planted it two arces away from anything. I needed a tree to grow next to my pony's grave so that I could have some shade when I visit him. I REALLY DO LOVE ALL THE INFO YOU HAVE GIVEN. :D:D:D:D The people on this sight are A God send!!!
