I have a 35 year old maple tree in my yard which has suddenly developed a large crack in the bark. It is about a foot in length, in the shape of a smile. Water running down the trunk does not run into the opening although I can stick my fingers up underneath it. Will the tree survive? What can I do to help the situation? Leaves are bright green and no other problems are evident (maybe a Norway Maple)
Norway Maple is apparently prone to cracking of the trunk by frost. Don't see much of a problem in my area, but multiple sources mention it - even commercial ones. Did you recently have a brisk winter?
