I saw this in a British garden recently. It's a common plant there, so I imagine that it is here, too but I don't recognize it. Karin
Fremontodendron californicum, in the mallow family. A few cultivars exist, and I don't know them well enough to say if this is one of them. UBC has a 'California Glory' (I think) growing right beside the gatekeeper's window at the entrance to the garden.
I've not been the greatest with plant IDs lately, but I'm fairly certain I'm right with this one. One noticeable flower difference between Abutilon and Fremontodendron is the number of anthers and filaments coming off the staminal column. Fremontodendron has five (as shown in the photo for the plant to be ID'd and on the page I linked to), while Abutilon has "many", generally 20+ (image search for Abutilon).
I second the nomination. I have 'California Glory' in both the Camano and Edmonds gardens. It is the only one I encounter in garden centers here.
