shrub?

    I found a number of these "shrubs". They are all roughly 6 inches tall but I'm guessing they would probably be shrubs if the deer did not eat them. They have woody stems and were found at the edge of wet woods on a northern VA mtn. The property is in the Appalachians, a cove forest.
