This shrub at Morton Park near English Bay caught my attention because the buds, which I assume are flower buds, look like cactus fruits of Pereskia or Pitaya, fat red buds with green recurved sepal tips. Leaves are opposite and decussate (cross each other).

There are some unusual plants in the beds here; I don't know, though, if this is an unusual one or not.

A species of Cistus; looks most like Cistus ladanifer. Yep, flower buds. Does the foliage have a strong, pleasant resinous scent and feel slightly sticky to touch?
