It was mid-October It was photographed in mid-October. Another post of mine may be involve the same species - the best photo there is: http://forums.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/attachments/dsc02714compr-jpg.137583/ What I saw of the plant was limited due to heavy intergrowth with other plants. It was at least a shrub, perhaps 2 meters tall, but it might have been a small tree.
That's Hinau (Elaeocarpus dentatus). The teeth on the leaves vary somewhat in size. Those shown in your photo are quite large. You can see more mages on my website at http://www.cfgphoto.com/photos-elaeocarpus-2062.htm
