Last year I planted 250 of brecks King Alfred daffs and 250 tulips these were the biggest, best & most exspensive they supply this year they are only 55% to 65% the size, a friend took some of his bulbs to be tested and was told it was nematodes could this be the problem and if so what can I do to bring them back ??? Tks Rusty
Re: shriking daffs I have been told that bulbs don't always produce as well in following years if the soil nutrients are low. The bulbs when you purchase them generally haven't been allowed to flower so a lot of strength that goes into producing the flowers is kept in the bulbs. Your's have spent one season supporting the flowers so maybe try a good dose of bulb fertilizer. Anne
Re: shriking daffs Are you saying that the BLOOMS are 55 percent or the BULBS? You mean less flowering or smaller/fewer flowers? I would try bulbtone sprinkled on top and see what they do next year. Unless you have a very soggy place the bulbs should be fine after one year.
Re: shriking daffs Well I hope you don't have nematodes but you can take yours to your extension agent and check it. You won't be able to plant anything in that area for a couple of years ...they stay in the soil. Check with a professional about what product to use. so sorry. what a mess.
Re: shriking daffs Yes: although his bulbs had nematodes yours may not. You can probably look up nematodes in daffodils on the internet to see if it mentions same symptoms as you have. If yours are diminishing rapidly there is definitely a problem of some sort.
