I grow long-day onions for beautiful pearl onions at end of summer. Timing is important to make sure the bulbs don't get too large for pickling, and I need to direct seed by end of June; any sooner and the bulbs, though tasty, are not suitable for pickling.

QUESTION: How can I get bulbs earlier in the season...say, by early June? If I plant short-day seeds in March, would they bulb before the critical day length?

Moved this to Fruit and Vegetable Gardening, maybe you'll get a reply here. It sounds like something that would be worth the small cost and effort to try if no one can report on any previous success.

Thank you, Daniel. I am interested, but I don't understand the "small cost." Is there a fee for the specialty forums? Best wishes, Karla.

Karla, Daniel meant "worth the small cost and effort to try" your idea yourself, even if no-one can tell you if it's going to work.

No, no cost on any part of the forums.

Thanks for clearing up my confusion. I plan to experiment if I don't get a response. It's a pretty sublime question. Thanks again. ^ks
