That's what I'm guessing my parents have. They have 2 of them, and one gets a lot of Dallas sunlight til mid-day. The other is pretty shaded. The one that gets sun is BRILLIANT. Absolutely stunning. My dad doesn't remember what cultivar it is, but I think it's probably shin deshojo. I took some pics of both. What do you guys think? The trees are probably about 25 years old, and were actually transplanted from their old house just 5 years ago. Parent's Mystery Maple Warren
Wang, Your folks have a lovely plant. I'm hardly the most acute observer of JM cults characteristics but I would not think your pics are of 'Shin deshojo'. Maybe it's because I've not seen a mature specimen but the upright, sturdy form and the deeply divided leaves are not features of trees I have seen.
Warren, very nice trees and great that they transplanted well. Agree with Poetry that the leaves do seem more deeply divided than what i'm familiar with too, although there is a photo by mjh1676 with leaves that seem deeply divided here http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?p=197419#post197419 , so not sure.
Yeah, I just got a small shin deshojo from Eastwood Nurseries and the more I look at it, the more I agree that it's not the same plant. The shin deshojo that I have has kind of a wave to the leaf, and a sheen that the leaves on my parent's plant does not have. Those leaves are a very matte finish. The veining seems different too. Perhaps it is Beni Maiko? Was that popular 25 years ago? I forgot to ask him where he got it from. Warren
The leaves don't look similar to a young 'Beni Maiko', but haven't seen a 25 year old tree, which is said to change it's leaf shape as the tree matures.
