What kind of results can I expect if I shear Heather (Erica)? Is this a good time trim it and tidy it up - it's over-running its bed.

As with junipers, stay out of old, bare wood as this will not refurnish well, if at all. If you get 'dead zones' around the edges after cutting back as far as you would like then it is time to either let it spill or take it out. Shear when flowers are going over and new growth is starting. This will vary with the variety.
