I have just received some purple shamrocks as a gift. Noticed they are bulbs and planted shallow, as are irises. Do you think they would survive southweat Ontario winters? My irises survive quite well. Or would it best to keep them potted?

No, they have to live indoors.

I live in Iowa. You could do as I do .I plant them outside in the summer sun and just after the first light frost in fall I dig them .Carefully clean the dirt and dead leaves off them and store the bulbs in a dark cool place for the winter. Will multiply very quickly outside.
