Hello all! My first post and new to gardening. We are on a south facing slope near cedar hill golf course. Seems to be mostly clay soil. We are looking for a series of trees to provide shade for the backyard and are looking for some suggestions. We would prefer if they were fast growing and somewhat drought resistant. Don't really care about leaf size but would prefer no berries or seed pods that are poisonous to kids. We are thinking of one of them being a catalpa. We are hoping to get some suggestions of trees (that are available locally) that could fit this bill. Thanks! Jon
Visit local collections and take a look at what they have. Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, Butchart Gardens, the agicultural experiment station near Sydney... Can't beat seeing previously established specimens in person, noting their character and where (climate, soil, exposure, watering regime) they are doing well (and are not doing well).
