Searching for a tree that would provide summer shade comfort like the Mulberries and Plane Trees in France for summer dining and relaxation. An alternative to a sun umbrella I guess. Location south patio in West Vancouver 8 hours of sun in summer- site surrounded by giant firs and hemlocks so dark and damp in winter.
    Preferred height 5-6 m, spread 8-10m.
    Does such a tree exist?

Would Pacific Dogwood (Cornus nuttallii) suit?

What about a fruit tree? I love sitting under the apple tree when it's in blossom.

Sorry, was in a hurry and did not read the question properly - the fruit tree might be a problem on a patio . Can you root a climber in the garden or container and train it so cast shade over the patio? I have also seen trees growing through holes cut in the decking but this may not be an option.

Try 'Trees for Garden and Patio' table in 'Guide to Plant Selection' section near front of Sunset WESTERN GARDEN BOOK.
