Hi, I'm trying to plant an herb and vegetable garden and most of the space I have for one is in semi-shade or shady places.

What kinds of vegetables would grow best in that sort of environment?

I think A general rule veggies and herbs are full sun. Many herbs are mediteranian. Vegetables become leggy in shady areas. They need to grow quickly so plenty of light, moisture and food. Have you thought of doing herbs in pots and placing them in sunny areas. Even things like lettuce (picking lettuce)and tomatoes grow well in pots.

    Check out this link...

    http://www.propeller.com/viewstory/...ine.com/picks_10vegforshadeC21.htm&frame=true

    It lists:

Salad Greens, such as leaf lettuce, arugula, endive, cress, and radicchio
    Broccoli
    Cauliflower
    Peas
    Beets
    Brussels Sprouts
    Radishes
    Swiss Chard
Leafy Greens, such as collards, mustard greens, spinach, and kale
    Beans

I haven't tried any of these in the condidtions you've mentioned... but I hope this helps :)
