Identification assistance please. Photo 1, could be jacko lantern, but shows no bioluminescence. Photo 2, may show 1 type of boletus, possibly more; think it may be calopus. Photo 3, surely they are agaricus campestris?
The agaricus smells pretty much like field mushrooms we collect at home. We've cooked some up - not yet eaten them - and their cooking smell is that ordinary mushroom aroma. Pretty sure that we'd picked jack'o'lanterns; there was some luminescence there at about 3 o'clock this morning. Figure the boletes probably not edible - the numerous wild pigs which had turned most of the area for miles around hadn't eaten them.
Boletes are among the safest to eat. I am not an adventourous mushroom eater, so I would never try those with red pores, but I would definitely try yours. I eat only freshly gathered mushrooms, in good condition.
Thanks for that - tried a pinch of the cap and it seemed a little bitter. Tomorrow we're off to Sardinia which has experienced much the same recent weather and we may come across some more fungi there. Never thought of mushrooming in Europe and pretty wary as subtle variations within the species are deceptive from one hemisphere to another!
