Send in a sample for ID

Discussion in 'Plants: Identification' started by Unregistered, Aug 4, 2005.

  1. I don't have a digital camera. Is there an address where I can send a sprig of something that I'd like ID'd? I'm in Vancouver.

    Thanks.

    Hello,

You could bring a sample in to the garden on Tuesday or Wednesday between noon and three if you would like to talk to someone about it. Or you might try taking it to any garden centre in your area. I am reluctant to tell you to mail it in; it may not get dealt with properly. Perhaps it will be best if you call in first and then decide what to do. Here is the contact info:

Please call during the Hortline hours: noon to three on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

You may want to try the Plant Identification forum. Plants have been ID'd with good descriptions before.

    Good luck,

  3. Okay, thanks. I work on weekdays so it would be hard to come in person. But if I take it to a garden centre that might work. I believe it's a vigorous and probably invasive plant (it looks SO MUCH like bindweed but with a redder stem). It was planted by landscapers in a new townhouse development next to my house. Months before the landscapers came I was able to see the landscape architects design and it showed "fleece flower" in these spots. I find it hard to believe a landscape architect would recommend this plant. After 4 weeks the vine had climbed all the way up a 5 foot star magnolia. Does fleece flower look anything like bindweed?

Well, it certainly sounds like a Polygonum of some sort. There are some members of the family which are invasive, though it is hard to say without a bit more info / photographs.

Do a search for Polygonum on these forums to see if anything resembles it (middle of upper green bar to search)

Sounds like Polygonum baldshuanicum or a similar species. Start with that name, anyway, you will encounter taxonomic reclassifications looking up just about any knotweed so expect that as part of the excersize.
