In The 12 Years That I Have Had This Tree I Have Not Seen Any Seeds From This Tree. What Could Be Happening Or Does This Tree Not Produce Seeds?
this cultivar is raised and introduced by Cascio USA in 1965(news by the book Maples for Garden)the photo in the book is without seeds...alex
Crimson Queen DOES produce samaras. There are so many parameters determining flowering & seed set and we know so little as per the thread before yours in this forum.Maple age is not always linear and trees can suffer re-juvenilization. Be patient and keep looking. I have found that spotting samaras is a special vision; I have scanned trees days in a row and then suddenly I see 1 that was there (my mind says) all along but that my eye just noticed. What is the circumference of your tree's trunk?
will try to get pictures of tree and post. looked at twig and found very flexible and cut one twig and found green at surface layer.
toborjl, sorry about any delay answering. I have been thinking of your post as I collect seeds from my trees and looking at the caliper of the trunks. I wud agree with you that your Crimson Queen seems "mature" enough to seed for sure. Wish I could explain why that is not happening, but I have trees smaller than yours that seed and I have trees plenty big enough to seed but produce nothing like yours. We just have to be patient. I hope 2008 loads your CQ with tons of seeds. Good luck
Laceleaf maples generally do not seem particularly enthusiatic about setting fruits, probably within the normal parameters for some 'Crimson Queen' to be effectively sterile.
As Ron says laceleafs seem very reluctant to set seed I am seeing only a few seeds on these plants this year for the first time Any I harvested in previous years have failed to germinate
