    Water retentive gel

Water retentive gel is an inert growing medium that is sold as dry crystals which swell in volume when water is added forming a granular jelly which can be used on its own as a starter medium for woody cuttings. It could be added to a starter mix that you would custom formulate according to your specific needs. It may be used in some commercial mixes, which you could find out about by asking your local nursery or garden supply store.

    More on gel

David T. and Judy N. say that the hanging basket mix produced by Sunshine contains gel in the formula; however, they caution that the gel can glom together in very wet spring weather....as mentioned earlier, best talk to your local garden supplier.
