This strange nut/seed was brought into my house by a vole. When I first got the seed, it was covered with a thin dry outer covering blackish in colour and a little tacky to the touch. After soaking it in water, the outer covering came off easily, and this is the nut/seed that was inside. I live in northern Ontario, but have yet to see this kind of nut. Any help?

If it were in Florida, I would suggest something like Pond Apple (Annona glabra) or its relatives...

Thanks for the reply Audrey. I will check out your suggestion. I am definitely a long way from Florida, but there are people in my area who spend time there and may have brought it home with them as a fruit or something and then thrown it out. It's hard to tell how it would show up here otherwise. Again, thanks for the reply.
