I'm not much of a plant grower, but my orchids are very happy in my garden window and one that I've had for about 3 years which continues to bloom (it's a phally) had recently grown another plant from it. The new plant has 2 long stems of blooms approx. 18-24" long. Only one bud has bloomed. I was watering the plant and the smaller plant broke away and I'm not sure what to do with it. It is already very mature with the two long stems comming out. It has many healthy roots that have grown without any potting material. How do I pot this and how soon do I have to? It has about 3 inches of the old plant stem attached along with at least 20 (at least 10-12" roots). It is a beautiful plant and I don't want to lose it.

Find a container-you may have to make one-be sure to punch out holes for drainage-that the plant will fit into. get a bag of medium to coarse grade fir bark and after putting the plant in the container pour in the bark. Do not mash down just tap the container on a table or what have you to settle the bark. Water and place back where it is happy!!!

Will do. My main concern is that it was living off of the main plant for so long that it has many healthy roots that have grown from about 12-24" long. Basically, it grew upside down with the 2 new flowering stems (it's bloomed once before) growing up to the sunny area. I definitely neglected it, but it was doing so well and I have no experience what so ever with plants.

Should I try to put all of the roots into the new pot? Can I assume that I will need a larger than normal container since the roots are so extensive? I have the plant in a cup of water right now. I am going to get the soil tomorrow.

    Thanks again for your help.
