Does anyone know where I might be able to purchase Russet apple trees for our property? My husband and I live in central Wisconsin, I am originally from the Toronto area, and have not been able to find Russets anywhere here since I moved (no grocery store/orchard/market seems to have them). The only distributors I have seen are located in the UK, and I'm not sure about having trees shipped from out of the country. If anyone has any clues as to where I might find a supplier in the US, I would appreciate info! We have a small hobby farm and are hoping to start an orchard with a few varieties of apples, and I would love to include Russets. Thank you!
Look out for 'Egremont Russet', it's got the best flavour of any apple, delightfully nutty, real "season of mists and mellow fruitfulness". Unfortunately you're right, you won't be able to import them from over here, due to plant health regulations.
St. Lawrence Nurseries -- several russets in their catalog. I ordered just two trees from them almost four years ago, a 'Red Baron' and a 'Goodland'. I am very happy with them and intend to order more trees from them in the future. I wonder if, being from Canada where itself originated, you are familiar with the 'Sandow' apple variety? "Our family loves this apple--and the photograph doesn't do it justice! A cross in taste between a Cortland and a Russet...." - happyappleacres.com St. Lawrence describes this Northern Spy offspring as very high quality. It sounds wonderful!
Cloud Mountain Farm carries Ashmead's Kernal, a wonderful antique russet, and often has Roxbury Russet available as well. They ship from mid-February through late April.
